What the Apple LaserWriter did for desktop printing and iMovie for desktop video, so too does Podcasting accomplish for radio—that is, put the power to produce in the hands of common folk like you and me.

The term “Podcasting” is actually a bit of a misnomer—you don’t need an iPod at all to either make or listen to this homegrown radio-style content. But a label that capitalizes on all that iPod marketing hype surely couldn’t hurt!

The key to enjoying this new medium is to get a software aggregator for the MP3 content spread far and wide across the internet. Just as the iPod is friendly to Mac and Windows both, Podcasting solutions are available for multiple platforms as well.

Over the course of the holidays I’ve listened to a number of Podcasts, ranging from nobodies in their basement postulating about their next cell phone to regurgitated commercial talk radio. Within that spectrum I’ve found a couple of gems, even room perhaps for a Podcast of my own! Stay tuned…
