Career Suicide?

I just finished watching the season finale of Doctor Who, the last episode starring Christopher Eccleston as Britain’s favourite sci-fi superstar.

If you didn’t know, Eccleston quit the series after the first episode was filmed, but was kind enough to play out the rest of his contract. In so doing, however, he may in fact have brought about the very typecasting he sought to avoid, as bringing a long-dormant fantasy franchise rocketing back to the top of the ratings isn’t the sort of thing that goes entirely unnoticed…

While I can sympathize with a fellow actor who wants to keep his artistic freedom, roles like this come along once in a lifetime, if you’re lucky—so why not hop aboard the gravy train and see how far it goes?

Instead, I fear the talented Mr. Eccleston has missed the boat.
