Teen Buzz: Can You Hear What They Hear?

WARNING: Playing this audio file may result in the realization that you’re no longer a teenager…

The web is all abuzz—quite literally—about what’s alternately known as either Teen Buzz or The Mosquito Noise.

It all started last year when a Welsh security company released The Mosquito, an almost ultrasonic noisemaker built to drive unruly teenagers out of unwanted places with a high-pitched tone that only their tender young ears could hear. But faster than you can say “That’s so Raven!”, the kids turned the tables on us old fogies, wreaking havoc in the classroom with ringtone versions of the sound that their teachers are oblivious to.

Have a listen for yourself. I can barely make it out, and after only a few repeated plays it becomes indistinguishable from the background noise of my computer.

But kids, don’t count us grups out just yet; I noticed that the same security company is now selling the ringtone version of the mosquito noise for direct mobile download on the front page of their site. It all comes full-circle, see?

Whoohoo! I’m still young! Or at least my ears are.

Then again, I didn’t spend years of my youth pounding the crap out of drums….

This isn’t even remotely related, but I thought you’d be interested in knowing that I hung out with an old friend of yours. A very old friend indeed. Very old. Yes.
