    I’m a Bling Bling Blogger!

My nerd school professors would be so proud…!

Starting at the end of this month, I’ll be able to add the title “paid blogger” to my résumé, not because I’m putting advertising on this site, but because someone’s actually going to start paying me for what I do most mornings anyway—that is, trawl the web for news then post my own smart-ass take on it.

I have to consult my future boss before linking to the site I’ll be working for, but because they’ll have exclusive rights to what I post there I’ll have to reserve this space for a much more personal reflection on my secret dreams and hidden desires.

    … Yeah, right!

Flung Open are the Gates of Hell!

So after spending the last two days setting up my blogging system’s Photo Gallery I’ve nixed it in favour of a link to my free Flickr account. It joins the very long list of my del.icio.us tags under a heading titled “The Great Beyond…”, in the right-hand sidebar about halfway down this very page.

Blog snobs will argue that I shouldn’t embed content from external sites on my own index page—if Flickr and/or del.icio.us ever go tits-up or are even put offline temporarily for maintenance then the result is a lot of empty screen real estate for valued readers like you. On the other hand, I’m not taking design advice from anyone who has Google Ads littered all over their own site.

Heck, all I really want to do is get to tagging like the rest of you…

    del.icio.us this :-P

Please note that I’ve changed “The Great Beyond…” to the more pedestrian “External Links”. It just seemed a little less ghey.

    Everything in Moderation

Until this very moment my online publishing system demanded that you enter an email address before sharing a comment. This was only a security measure to ward off potential comment spammers, and as I’ve recently discovered, can be easily beaten by entering a bogus address.

Now you can submit anonymous comments to your heart’s delight, but unfortunately I’m going to have to approve each and every one before making it go live.

Another option is to sign up as a member. Traffic on this humble site is quickly approaching a milestone of one million unique visitors, so if you’re a member then the crème de la crème of web surfers can all get in touch with you via a secure contact page like mine.

    Just a thought…
    :D

    Ad-Free since July 4th

FYI, all advertisements from Amazon Associates and Google AdSense have been removed from this site. They were pretty much useless, anyway…

I found the same w/ Amazon, but I’m doing pretty good w/ Adsense. I don’t remember where you put your adsense before, but usually the low return for Adsense has to do with Ad placement and color.

      Hiya Randy,

Thanks for the comment… This might be a good primer for anyone else considering advertising on their site:

I’m thinking of putting ads up on Candy Critic. Many have told me it would be a good idea and the bills could always use a little help. I tried Commission Junction in the past and due to my failure it didn’t work, but I’m thinking of trying again. Any comments from those in the cyber world?

    What the F**k?

Those of you who’ve mastered the scroll-wheel on your mouse and/or the page-down button on your keyboard already know the horrible truth—there’s advertising on my site!

I once entertained the notion of accepting donations for my blog. Now, for the next couple of weeks at least, I’m gonna see if the otherwise unused real estate on my sidebar brings in any extra revenue—all you have to do is either complain via comment below, or click on anything that might possibly be of interest to you. The fine folks at Google have assured me that you won’t be sent in the direction of any naked Russian teens with mortgage refinancing info. Sorry.

I guess if I was really serious about this I could sell paid memberships with premium content, à la Salon. I’m just not sure if I have the guts to become a full-time blogger yet. Maybe someday…

      AC:

Actually, I’ve never scrolled down that far –I check your blog at least a couple of times a week, and I’ve never had to go that far back.
At least you don’t have popups telling me my computer could explode at any moment or that I can get free screensavers….

Oh– this is blogging. I’ve heard of blogging. I like it. Did you need this comment?

      Thought so.

      Ross

p.s. Your Uganda expedition was delightful, Andrew. Thanks.
