    NOW What?

    now_lies.jpg

Graffiti or prophecy? Taken at the corner of Dundas Street & University Avenue.

You may have noticed that I haven’t had any tech columns published in NOW Magazine as of late. Here’s why:

Two of the three pieces I’ve had published have proved to be an epic struggle with my editor, requiring multiple rewrites and lengthy phone conversations. A piece I wrote about the Telus bid to take over Fido followed a similar pattern, but after lots of tweaking I woke up on the morning of June 17th fully expecting to see my very timely piece in the new edition of the free weekly paper.

Instead I got a short email from the editor saying that the piece was “really close but not quite there”, whereas just a few days prior it seemed like it was a go. And I haven’t had any correspondence with her since.

With my paltry commission I certainly didn’t take on this gig for the money, but the constant rejection is starting to wear on my impregnable ego just a little bit, as it becomes more and more apparent that my editor clearly isn’t a fan.

So what do you think? Time for me to move on, or should I just suck it up and thank my lucky stars for this low-paying but high-profile opportunity?

    E3 Expo

Sometimes a dedicated journalist like myself has to do whatever it takes to get the story. I’m not sure if this is one of those times, but nonetheless, I’ve booked myself a flight to Los Angeles for E3 next week.

My editor at NOW Magazine has secured me a press pass, and odds are she’ll publish whatever I write about the event. But since I have to pay my way there and back I’m losing money in the equation. Still, it’s been more than twelve years since I lived in the City of Angles, and I’ve been looking for an excuse to visit!

    Triple Threat

Well, it seems my flight to Florida has been delayed. But some good news: I’ve just remembered that my third and therefore best yet technology piece has been published in today’s NOW Magazine. Check out the goods here.

    Oscar Links

The roundup of Oscar-related websites I was asked to cull for NOW magazine has been published in today’s issue. For some reason I’m not credited on the web version of the piece, but I did indeed write it — or cut and paste it at least!

I thought this was a very funny, informative and alternative look at Oscar on the web.

Well done, Andrew. Is this going to be a regular gig?

Looks like. I just sold the editor on an article about copyright reform… Stay tuned!

    My Next Big Thing

Well, waddaya know? It seems that NOW magazine has finally decided to publish the piece I wrote for them a month ago. You can read the online version here. And for anyone who missed my edge-of-frame fame on Conan last night, I’ll post a video as soon as I’m able…
