Props to my boss at iLaugh for passing on this link…

A Spanish-language site for Apple fans has republished the YouTube version of my Apple Store Guy video with the following blurb, courtesy of Babel Fish:

In the inauguration of the last Apple Store opened in the Eaton Center of Toronto, one of the members of iLaugh.com went to cover the event… and it ended up it arming. Known already like “The Apple Store Guy” from that day in Internet, because it was made happen through an employee of the store, greeting and shouting people to him, trying even to strain itself inside before they opened. As the thing finished? With tio expelled from the Apple Store of by life. As if there were not already enough crazy people in those inaugurations like so that it is strained one more…

Something got lost in the translation, I think… Nevertheless, muchas gracias Applesfera!

Yes, a South African filmmaker has made the first-ever feature shot entirely on a mobile phone. Yes, the French have embraced mobilized filmmaking with an emphatic “oui”. And now Canada has its first mobile film festival…

So why am I not entering?

Because I understand that, just like computers, mobile phones are not made for the passive consumption of content—that’s what television and movie screens are for. Walk down your typical city street and I reckon you’ll see way more people doing thumb gymnastics on their handset keypads than watching the latest “mobisode” of 24 on their tiny, two-inch screens. That’s because they are interacting with their devices, and by extension, other people. And this is something that traditional video content, even on mobiles, cannot deliver.

Read between the lines of the the Mobifest website and you’ll see little more than a marketing ploy by Palm to peddle their Treos and a veritable dumping ground of repurposed content.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have a video-enabled handset; but I’ll use it for sharing my own content, thank-you very much… Not what someone else tells me to!

Having spent the weekend directing Katie Bergin‘s short film The Cat vs. Brian, I’ve a pretty rough Monday ahead of me. This morning I have to fight rush-hour traffic on both sides of town to return rented production gear, then race back home to shower and shave for a 1pm audition which I’ll surely blow, if for no other reason than the huge bags under my eyes from three days of minimal sleep. Then I have to haul ass over to a paid corporate consulting gig, and hope to god they’ll still let me in when I show up half an hour late.

And yet, I carry no regrets about my lack of preparedness for today’s events. I spent my weekend in the company of seven very dedicated and talented people, and had an absolute blast even through a sixteen-hour day. Thanks to all for a great shoot!

These days I’m getting stretched hard in two directions—during the day I’m rehearsing for the Fringe, and almost as soon as I get home I have to start fumbling my way through Apple’s new Final Cut Studio, editing a series of videos for the Dora Awards later this month.

Fortunately, the missus and I are able to take a break this weekend. Here’s where we’ll be…

Darryl’s Hard Liquor and Porn Film Festival / Montreal

Saturday June 18, 2005

Société des arts technologiques / Society for Arts and Technology [SAT]

1195 Saint-Laurent boulevard Montreal

Aloha ventilateurs du cinema…

This is a reminder that next Saturday June 18, 2005 in Montreal we will be hosting the first bilingual Hard Liquor and Porn Film Festival ( that’s two tongues ). It should be a rocking time. If you can’t make it then wish us luck!

Here’s a blurb from the french web page…

“Humorous and sexy short films, animations and videoclips, the brainchild of imaginative creators from Montreal, Toronto and New York, will be presented to the public. Some of these video projects will be the winners of the call for submissions launched by the festival organizers and the SAT, selected by a jury of experts (we like to consider ourselves as such!).

The dress code for the evening is to be respected. You only have to dress as a star… Movie star? Rock star? Bike star? Fishing star? We don’t really care as long as you’re disguised. The most inventive and extraordinary costumes will be awarded prizes.

On top of the film projections on giant screens, erotic music chosen by DJs X-Cube and Logan X (so many Xs! it’d be wanted we wouldn’t be surprised). VJs Les Technocrates and Johnny Ranger are stuck with the hard but rather pleasant task of remixing old porn flicks.

We await you in large numbers for this event that promises to be erotic, sensual, kinky but mostly very funny! “

The films and festivities happen at the Societe des arts technologiques.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

Advance tickets can be purchased from http://www.admission.com

We hope to see you there.

A Bientot!

The Hard Liquor and Porn Film Festival is an annual showcase for funny and creative short films about sex. The Festiival began in 2000 as a party in the humble bachelor apartment of filmmaker Darryl Gold and continues to grow every year. Filmmakers, animators, actors, writers, comedians, musicians, artists and any other reprobates (gay or straight) are welcome to submit films.

Visit http://www.hardliquorandporn.com for more info.

Darryl Gold

Director of Programming

Darryl’s Hard Liquor and Porn Film Festival

… Rumour has it that my entire trilogy of Cat Sitter films will be screened there, so if you’re in the neighbourhood, come on by!
